Kitchen storage - could be doing you harm

Storing our leftovers in plastic containers or tupperware has been a staple in our kitchens since the 1970’s.

We’ve all taken leftovers from the fridge and popped them straight in the microwave to re-heat, in the container. Have you realised that heating plastic means nasty toxins could be leaching into your food?

Maybe its time to look for alternatives.

Whats the harm?

Plastic food containers can contain chemicals such as BPA (bisphenol A) and phthalates, which may leach into food. These substances are known endocrine disruptors that can interfere with hormones, potentially contributing to issues like reproductive problems, metabolic disorders, and increased risk of certain hormone-sensitive conditions.

Containers are more likely to leach chemicals when heated in the microwave, storing hot or acidic items like tomato sauce or curry, or as the plastic ages and scratches.

Microplastics shed from plastic containers during everyday use (particularly when reheating) add another layer of concern. Research shows these tiny particles, along with associated chemicals, can enter our food and bodies, adding to our overall toxic load.

Glass eliminates this risk entirely — it's inert, non-porous, and chemically stable, so nothing leaches into your meals, no matter how you use it.

“This one was a quick and easy thing for us to change. No more re-heating leftovers in plastic! We changed to use our existing pyrex dishes instead - all glass.“

Health benefits

By making the switch, you:

  • Reduce daily exposure to hormone-disrupting chemicals and microplastics.

  • Protect vulnerable family members, including children, whose developing systems may be more sensitive.

  • Enjoy peace of mind knowing your food stays pure, without absorbing odours, stains, or bacteria that can linger in scratched plastic.

Glass is also easier to clean thoroughly, supporting better food hygiene and reducing the chance of bacterial build-up.

BUT - there are a couple of negatives. Glass is heavier than plastic, which can be noticeable for lunchboxes or transport, and it requires careful handling to avoid breakage. The initial investment can be high.

“Our tip - pop into your local Op Shop to search for glass containers instead. Often much cheaper and can easily be sanitised and washed at home before use. “

Environmental advantages

Plastic production relies on fossil fuels, and when containers break down — in landfills, oceans, or even during recycling — they release microplastics that pollute waterways, soil, and wildlife.

In Australia, plastic waste management faces challenges, with low recycling rates and ongoing environmental contamination. Glass, made from natural sand and minerals, tells a different story:

  • It doesn’t degrade into harmful microplastics.

  • It is infinitely recyclable without losing quality — turning old glass back into new containers again and again.

  • It lasts for decades with proper care, meaning fewer replacements and less overall waste.

Choosing glass helps break the cycle of single-use and short-lived plastic, reducing pollution that affects our oceans, ecosystems, and even the food chain we rely on. It’s a genuine step toward a more circular, low-impact kitchen.

Practical tips for replacing plastic storage containers at home

  1. Start small. Replace high use items first, such as containers for leftovers, like we did.

  2. Prioritise sets. Look for ones with durable, food-grade silicone seals for leak-proof, airtight performance.

  3. Optimise for your kitchen. Square or rectangular shapes stack efficiently to save fridge space. Mix sizes for versatility, and look for nesting designs.

  4. Be food safe. Remove lids before putting in the microwave and allow hot food to cool slightly before sealing lids.

  5. Shop Australian where possible. Look for eco brands, support local if you can. Budget friendly options include Amazon, Kmart and BigW, as well as trying second hand in your local Op shop.
